Middle Years Programme

SIS delivers the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6-10, promoting inquiry, reflection, and real-world connections for lifelong learning.

Developing Global-Minded Citizens

The MYP curriculum framework aims to foster students’ agency, inquiry, and reflection, promoting international awareness and preparing them for active participation in a global society. By imparting conceptual understanding, skills, and knowledge, the program empowers students to connect their learning with the real world and become lifelong learners. It invites students to engage with both local and global communities, offering opportunities for developing leadership skills.

Fostering Critical Thinking and Collaboration

The MYP units of inquiry foster knowledge, skills, dispositions, and subject understanding through broad, balanced, conceptual, and interconnected learning experiences. This educational approach encourages learners to comprehensively explore and understand the world around them. It promotes the development of critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills. By integrating these elements, the program creates a holistic learning environment that fosters a deep understanding of concepts and their application in real-world contexts.

Empowering Lifelong Learning

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) fosters a dynamic learning approach centered on conceptual understanding, global contexts, and Approaches to Learning (ATLs). Students explore 16 Key Concepts that connect disciplines to real-world issues, enhancing their critical thinking and application skills. The integration of ATL skills promotes independent inquiry, collaboration, and reflection, preparing students for lifelong learning and global citizenship.

Learning through Experience

MYP students at SIS engage in field trips, local learning walks, school camps, and offsite projects that broaden their horizons. The MYP’s Service as Action (SAA) program encourages active involvement in global peace initiatives, offering opportunities in Direct, Indirect, Advocacy, and Research service activities. This engagement helps students connect with the world and shape their identities by contributing to community change.

Promoting Language Development

We offer a Language and Literature course for mainstream English students, as well as a modified version for EAL learners that focuses on language acquisition. For Japanese, we provide both Language and Literature and Language Acquisition programs, with classes available at various proficiency levels. This tailored approach helps students enhance their language skills and achieve high competence in both English and Japanese.

Culmination of Learning

In their final year, MYP students complete the Personal Project, an independently researched and assessed task that develops key skills for future education and life. Students select a topic of personal interest, set a goal, and create a product that reflects their learning and growth. The process involves planning, research, and reflection, culminating in a formal presentation, with support from a supervisor to ensure they meet MYP standards. This project fosters self-directed learning, resilience, and personal achievement.

Assessments

Assessment in the MYP involves internal evaluations that use specific criteria to measure skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. In addition to tests and quizzes, students complete projects, presentations, and collaborative activities that reflect real-world scenarios. By emphasizing formative assessments, the MYP provides ongoing feedback to support student progress, ensuring they are evaluated on both effort and outcomes. Clear communication of assessment criteria promotes transparency and helps students understand learning expectations.
